COURSE INFORMATION

This Mother Jungle program in Bali offers purposeful, hands-on, certified professional development which approaches the challenges of the future, supporting participants to rethink the current model and the dominant culture of consumption which has driven the world to the edge of its capacity, to one that honors and sustains all life.

Mother Jungle has joined forces with Gaia Education and UNESCO Global Action Programme Priority Area 5- Accelerating Change at Local Level. There is an international call for qualified professionals who can build capacity for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals at local level.

Participants will be equipped with the skills and methodologies to design transformative learning environments that enable collaborative action. An essential part will be helping people to reconnect to themselves and to nature and by so doing transform their worldview, thus supporting sustainable development by becoming agents of change. People who seek opportunities to break out of their comfort zones away from working conditions to refresh, update and enhance their knowledge.

This journey with Mother Jungle in Bali will provide you with a distinctive experience to boost a different way of understanding the role of the economy and the importance of right livelihoods. You will gain a rich understanding of the culture and increase your environmental awareness through an experiential action based programme. There are three specific themes of focus: 1) Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, 2) Climate Change, and 3) Sustainable Consumption and Production

From all programs we run we will support a micro-finance budget for the local indigenous female entrepreneurs ‘Mothers of Light’ trained and supported by our partner ChapterW so they can start-up and sustain their cooperatives.

COURSE FOCUS

Sustainability: Be part of nature, not apart from it: reconnect to yourself and nature, transform your worldview and support the UN Sustainable Development Goals by becoming agents of change.
Cultural immersion: Learn from indigenous communities about their culture and the way they have been taking care of their environment. Empower these communities to defend themselves in protecting their own traditions.
Entrepreneurial skills: Accelerate your entrepreneurial skills to help design system change and creative regeneration.
Local community impact: Make a real difference on the destination; Travel the world in an ethical way and help make positive change on location.

This program is based on the UNESCO Roadmap for implementing the ‘Global Action Programme’ (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD):
1. Learning content: Integrating critical issues, such as climate change, biodiversity, disaster risk reduction (DRR), and sustainable consumption and production (SCP), into the curriculum. Promote awareness of the challenges of our time.
2. Pedagogy and learning environments: Designing teaching and learning in an interactive, learner-centred way that enables exploratory, action- oriented and transformative learning. Rethinking learning environments – physical as well as virtual and online – to inspire learners to act for sustainability.
3. Learning outcomes: Stimulating learning and promoting core competencies, such as critical and systemic thinking, collaborative decision-making, and taking responsibility for present and future generations.
4. Societal transformation: Empowering learners of any age, in any education setting, to transform themselves and the society they live in. Encourage transformation in worldviews Equip participants with tools to promote change.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Responsible Traveling: ‘It is up to us to take care of the planet, it is our only home’. Become aware of the ethical ways to travel the world and how to make a real difference on the destination. Learn to be switched on to the impact you have on the landscapes and seascapes you visit. Learn how responsible traveling can deliver ‘better places to live in and to visit’ – with the emphasis firstly on creating better places for local people.
Intercultural Communication: Learn together with people from around the world from different cultures and get resources to take back to own community. (offline and online)
Community Outreach: Learn to design and implement initiatives that will directly benefit its indigenous communities through low cost and green approaches. Indigenous communities in return will get the opportunity to restore wisdom, traditions and knowledge by sharing these with the participants.
Environmental Education: Create an understanding of how to interpret and analyse biological data of marine/forest to create awareness of the importance of conservation of marine/forest habitats.
Personal Development: Develop a personal resilience to inspire long-term & effective regenerative change. Deepen own well-being and the well-being of the planet and develop a personalised plan to get you into impactful action in your own communities.

PLACE OF COURSE

Based on the Island of Bali, the most popular island holiday destination in the Indonesian archipelago, our course will bring you closer to nature and provide a safe and tranquil environment for you to enjoy and thrive on. Bali is part of the Coral Triangle, the area with the highest biodiversity of marine species. In this area alone, over 500 reef-building coral species can be found. Bali is the home of the Subak irrigation system, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Balinese were able to develop and sustain their extremely complex agricultural economy for centuries through a very organized community structure. Bali is also home to a unified confederation of kingdoms composed of 10 traditional royal Balinese houses, where each house rules a specific geographic area. Bali boasts one of the most diverse and innovative performing arts cultures in the world and is renowned for its traditional and modern dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking and music. The Balinese people and the unique centuries old culture make this island one of the most fascinating places.

You will stay in The Lodge within the eco-village located just 5 minutes walk from Green School Bali. Green School is an example of an entire school, including students, educators, administrators, parents and community around the school being actively engaged in working towards a sustainable learning model for all with ESD fully integrated into the curriculum as the driving factor. The Lodge is the perfect location to learn about sustainable living and what impact this makes on our planet. During your visit, you will be able to fall asleep to the natural sounds of the jungle in a room made from 100% bamboo, have a swim in the natural spring pool by the Ayung River on your doorstep, and walk around our permaculture gardens to learn about the different herbs, plants, vegetables and fruit that we grow and consume sustainably.

ITINERARY

Visit the beautiful bamboo structures of Green School and Green Village, swim in the beautiful Ayung River and walk on paths through the jungle.
Discover the brilliant coastline of East Bali and go snorkelling at Labuan Amuk
Explore the island by bike with a Bali Eco & Educational Cycling Tour, to the highest point on the island with stunning views.
Learn about the island’s history, culture and traditions with a local expert led activity in the traditional Bali Aga village of Tengananan.
Experience the Indigenous Trunyan village located on the isolated eastern shore of the Lake Batur, at the foot of Mount Abang and hear about the unique customs of the Trunyanese.
Participate in ‘Marine Debris Surveying’ to learn more about reef and marine conservation and how to collect data from Reef Survey enabling local communities to witness the negative eﬀects of improper trash disposal and how to interpret it and integrate data into lesson plans of ANY core subject.
